The name Mercè is the Catalan equivalent of the Spanish 'Merced', both deriving from the Latin 'merces' or 'mercedis'. Originally, 'merces' referred to wages, reward, or hire in a commercial sense. However, in the context of Late Latin and Christian theology, the term underwent a semantic shift to signify 'grace', 'favor', or 'divine mercy', evolving from the concept of a payment for service to the unmerited benevolence bestowed by the divine upon humanity. Historically, the name is inextricably linked to the cult of 'Mare de Déu de la Mercè' (Our Lady of Mercy), which emerged in the 13th century with the founding of the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy in Barcelona. The Order was dedicated to the ransom and liberation of Christian captives.
