Linguistically, it stems from the Proto-Germanic *wurþiz, which is deeply tied to the concept of becoming and the unfolding of events. The name is cognate with the German 'werden' and shares a root with the Old English 'weorthan,' effectively making its literal translation 'the one who is becoming' or 'that which is happening.' Historically, the name evolved as a personification of the present moment within the triad of the Norns, the female entities who weave the tapestry of fate in Norse mythology. Unlike Urd (the past) or Skuld (the future/necessity), Verthandi represents the active, fluid transition of life as it occurs.
